Situation.

Someone you know calls out of the blue and asks for a favor. This person, wile not a friend, is someone you're going to run into again, i.e. a co-worker or someone you do business with.

This is their story:
At one of their side jobs, their automatic deposit "put the check into an account that was closed," and as a replacement, they got sent a replacement check that is postdated the 2nd of September. Getting that check postdated means that this money can'yt be used for bills that are due on the first, obviously, which is where you come in.

The plan is for them to sign the check over to you, you deposit the check, get them the mony, and your money comes in when the check clears.

The sum is pretty small, but substantial ($250). This is someone who you're likely to see again. Anything can happen, really. You think that since they're pretty sure to see you again, they would't cheat you, but then again, you never know.

What do you do? Do you offer to help them out? Not?

So, given the industry's move to singles, Time Warner says that it's going to move out of producing albums and instead concentrate on singles. Releasing mini-EPs by releasing three to four tracks at a time is going to protect them from the fact that a hot single, in this day and age of iTunes, gets bought more often than the entire album, which, after the single, may suck hot monkey taint. This way, they reason, there is no need to push anything that isn't a hit or may not be able to generate buzz.

From what I've read, the pro/con goes something like this:
PRO-
-Albums were getting shittier anyway Besides, buy the single you want.
-Instead of boring filler, crappy interludes, the mini-album just gives you good music
-Good acts will release more stuff quicker. instead of 15 or so somgs every year and a half, they may be able to release around that in 3-4 hits in a year's time.

CON-
-Kiss the mom and pop music stores goodbye.
-Being more hit driven, we'll now be innundated with MORE poppy, common denominattor stuff.
-Piracy concerns are likely intensified, as folk will just d/l the somg they want.

I'd like to hear opinions. There are some folk here who do music, and who listen to a lot of it, and buy a lot. Is it time to drop the album as preferred method to bring the music to the masses?

Somewhat urgent question...

Have any of you ever heard of the Golden Key International Honour Society? My little brother got an invitation to join it (one time fee of $70), and my parents are intrigued but know little about it and don't want to shell out the money if it's a scam like the "Who's Who" bullshit.

Any thoughts? I looked at the Web site, and it seems to be less scam-ish than "Who's Who," but it would be nice if someone here had a first-hand experience with it.
