Woo?

I know it's Castro and all, and he won't be missed, but isn't having a city-sponsored party in the Orange Bowl when he dies just slightly in poor taste? Just a smidge?

We need Fools.

My esteemed employer, the Motley Fool, is hiring like crazy, and we need good people. If any of y'all know someone who:
- needs a job
- wants a better job than the one they have
- has formidable copy-editing or back-end Web tech skills
- would be willing to move to the DC area in exchange for a job that pays well and offers kind of ludicrously good benefits

... kindly direct them toward jobs.fool.com, where they can fill out the Fool's unusually amusing job application. And hey, if they tell the Fool I sent 'em, I get cash money. Which, hey, always nice.

Furthermore...

...and this is quite appropriate, albeit written several years ago. Fine piece of The Onion at its best:

Stunning result here...

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Inland North

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

Bleep... bloop... bleep... bloop...

In honor of the new season of 24, my brother and a friend of his created an infomercial for Jack Bauer's Guide to Workplace Management. Hilarity ensues.

Tech notes.

Blogging can be emotionally rewarding, but professionally damning. Sure, there's a chance it'll come back to haunt me if I move from private to (very) public enterprise, but I understand that there are some people with needs unlike mine. You want to write something, but can't talk about work. Or you have things to say about people but don't want them to read it. You want to write, but not have your writings associated with you in particular.

I've had a LiveJournal for a while, and it has privacy guards built in. Well, Blogger has them in now, so it's possible to lock out entries in a group collaborative blog such as this. It's called the "new Blogger" and it seems to be tied into Google. Details are still coming in, but it seems to be a salvation for those who want to address those concerns and still do the blog thing, as opposed to long established and superior ways of groupthink and info-sharing, like listservs and other, more personal communiqué.

Just letting y'all know; those who've wanted password protection, or semi-anonymity, or a way to say what you really wanted to say in a blog, that it may be available now.

The dinosaur keeps dying

It's funny because it's true.

As usual, I am late to the party.

Hope y'all had a wonderful holiday season and a great New Year's Eve. As I sniffle and sneeze my way into 2007, I thought I'd post the link to my brand-new shiny Flickr account. Which, uh, currently mostly has pictures of zoo animals on it. Make of that what you will.
