This Sucks!
I feel a little safer posting this here than on my own blog.
Go to this site: buglenewspapers.com and download the northwest edition to read a story about my place of work. Here are a few things to consider:
What is the job of a trustee? Should trustees be supportive of the institution that they've been entrusted with? Do you want to roll your eyes, or throw up every time someone tells you to think outside the box? I won't go into detail about why the statistics quoted in the article are misleading (and misused), but here's one statistic that isn't mentioned: in 2006, we had more than a million circulations. To put it another way, last year, every item in the collection circulated 4 times.

If it makes you feel any better, the writing completely sucks.
Wow, this article blows, in more ways than one.
Some things should never be "thought out of the box," and library services really should be one of them. Having people argue about things they don't know (humans versus machines for checkout? Let's force people to use the machines!) doesn't end up very well for anyone. Being patron-centered just isn't sexy, though.
