o'connor has announced her retirement. rehnquist lost his battle with thyroid cancer. the confirmation hearings for john roberts are scheduled to begin on tuesday.
so...now what? early speculation has bush either promoting scalia or thomas to chief justice or going "outside" and appointing someone like attorney general gonzales. the article says the latter choice is more likely, but i wouldn't be surprised if we find ourselves referring to scalia as chief justice.
there's no doubt that the impact of these decisions could be ginormously huge. the question, though, is what can/should we do to make sure the impact is positive? obviously everyone's definition of "positive" will differ, but still. i'm not quite sure what to make of it, but i find it intriguing nonetheless.
and in other news, guess which company has been chosen to do some of the katrina cleanup work in mississippi and louisiana?
and did i mention that the war on terror is a fight for oil? just thought you might like to know.

I gotta agree with Laz here. So very, very.
My only hope is that the President's massive political unpopularity at present -- even before Katrina, he was less popular than Nixon during Watergate according to some polls -- will give his political opponents leverage against his inevitably horrible pick. But that would require the Democrats to collectively possess spines.
As for the shifting rationales for the Iraq war, I think Bush is basically grabbing at straws by this point. Give him a few months, and we'll probably either get "Jesus personally told me to," or "Dick Cheney needs sweet, sweet crude oil to live."

As the resident former conservative, I hate to say it, but, um, this changes nothing on the court. There's no way Bush can find someone as conservative as Rehnquist and get him (or her) through the Senate. Unless, of course, y'all are crediting Rehnquist for the sense of decorum the court has had under his watch and that that civility might be lost under a new CJ.
This is why it took me so long to switch teams, so to speak. Anything bad happens and all of a sudden the apocalypse is here, which is odd because I used to hang with people on the other side who actually believed the Second Coming was happening within a decade.
Get a grip, Jr. may still end up with a Supreme Court track record like his daddy.
